Stowers Institute: first research organization to give open access to data-images

The Stowers Institute, a biomedical research institute in Kansas City, Kansas, now requires members to deposit all original data-images in the Stowers Original Data Repository (ODR) or repositories maintained by third parties. The ODR was built on the OMERO platform by a team at the institute.

The huge data sets generated by imaging technology, among others, may require acquisition and post-processing steps to extract information and prepare images for publication. To allow members of the scientific community to make “independent, fully informed assessments of published results,” the institute now provides open access to the original data. An “Original Data” link is placed by publications listed on the Stowers website, and available data will also be accessible from the Stowers Institute homepage.
